Where We Perform

Being a non-profit independent theatrical society gives us a great deal of latitude to choose from a number of different performance venues based on the size of production we are presenting. Kelowna offers a good variety of professional spaces that we utilize to accommodate smaller, intimate shows with two to six or eight performers, or full scale productions with a cast of forty or fifty! Here are the theatres that we commonly use to present our productions:

 Black Box Theatre

One of our favourite venues is the Black Box Theatre, located at the back of the Kelowna Community Theatre. To enter the Black Box you literally have to walk along the outside of the Community Theatre until you read the Black Box Door, at the rear of the building. The Black Box served as a sizable rehearsal hall for decades until Theatre Kelowna Society approached the management of the Community Theatre with a proposal to use the space for a performance.

The show was a hit, the audiences were able to find us and the management of the Community Theatre decided to invest in upgrading the rehearsal hall into a viable performance space. Naturally, it's still available for rehearsing when it's not being used for performances.

In the 1200 sq. ft. Black Box Theatre we generally present smaller shows with up to eight or ten performers, accommodating an audience of approximately 80 to 100 in a cabaret style setting.

The Theatre is located on Water Street off of Hwy 97 (corner of Water Street and Doyle in Downtown Kelowna's Cultural District.)

Kelowna Community Theatre

No, you're not seeing double - in addition to performing in the Black Box at the rear of the Kelowna Community Theatre, we use the larger stage in the front of the theatre as well. Theatre Kelowna Society is very familiar with the main stage at the Community Theatre, having been a financial contributor over the years to support an upgrade to the facilities.

During the holiday season we like to present larger productions with many cast members so we can get the children of the community involved. The Kelowna Community Theatre is the perfect space for these productions with a huge stage, ample backstage, dressing rooms, set shop and an audience capacity of 885 seats.

Mary Irwin Theatre

The Mary Irwin Theatre is located in the Rotary Centre for the Arts in downtown Kelowna. With an audience capacity of 326 seats it's a perfect venue for shows that require more than an intimate setting but not the large capacity of the main stage at the Kelowna Community Theatre. It is named after one of the Founding Members of Theatre Kelowna Society - our own Mary Irwin - and, like many other organizations in the community, TKS was a financial contributor when the building was constructed.

It is a very up-to-date facility and, like the main stage at the Kelowna Community Theatre, the audience seating is 'raked', meaning that the seats rise the further away you get from the stage. This provides an unobstructed view of the stage from every seat in the house. While Theatre Kelowna Society has made use of this venue in the past, the current situation at the Rotary Centre for the Arts has necessitated the imposition of additional surcharges rendering this facility beyond the financial capabilities of most community non-profit societies - a situation we'd love to see change soon.

The Mary Irwin Theatre is located in the Rotary Centre for the Arts on Cawston Avenue directly across from Prospera Place.
