Opening Night is set in the Charles Killian Theatre on the opening night of Whisper on the Wind, an earnest Canadian play about a farm family. Among the audience members are Ruth and Jack, who are celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary. Neither is in the habit of theatregoing, but Ruth is eager to expand her cultural horizons, while Jack would rather be home watching baseball. In the VIP lounge prior to the show, they meet Michael, an out-of-work actor; Tom, the theatre bartender and an aspiring actor; and another couple, Richard and Cilla. Richard is the play's director, a blustery, pompous windbag with commitment issues; Cilla is a wealthy art-gallery director who suspects Richard of cheating on her with Libby, one of his cast members. When the first act of Whisper is disastrously derailed, both couples threaten to unravel as well.
